Archive for August 2007

Thanks very much for your warm welcome and I have to say, it’s great to be at a hamfest again. When I was a newly minted Technician in the Detroit area, Summer seemed like one swap after another, beginning with the annual pilgrimage to Dayton and ending at the start of football season.

Colleen and I love living in the Land of Enchantment and I’ll let you in on a little secret: Amateur radio was one of the things that enticed us here. When I was considering the move, I Googled amateur radio and Albuquerque and the first thing that popped up was Brian’s superb N5ZGT website. You all seem to have a group of enthusiasts connected to every niche in our hobby, from T-hunting to satellites, from search and rescue to repeaters. And I’ve been looking, but so far I can’t find a larger network of interconnected repeaters than you have here with the Megalink. August ARRL NM Section News

The League has announced the upcoming election for a New Mexico Section Manger. For personal reasons, I do not intend to stand for re-election. The details on the nomination and election process can be found on page 78 of the August, 2007, edition of QST. I have enjoyed my tenure as your Section Manager and I thank you for your support during the past four years. Continue Reading “August ARRL NM Section News” »

Crop Walk – October 21

This is an annual fund-raising walk to fight hunger. It will follow a two- or four-mile course starting in central Albuquerque at 1:00 p.m. Approximately six amateurs are needed to cover the course and keep an eye on the participants. This is a low-key event that is particularly appropriate for those interested in a taste of public service communications or who cannot commit higher levels of time and effort. It also usually marks the end of our active season for public service event support.

A request for assistance on this event has just come in, on somewhat short notice. This is an 800-mile endurance horse race covering the route of the old Santa Fe Trail from Santa Fe, NM, to Independence, MO. See www.sfthorserace.com. An effort is being made to obtain amateur radio support along the route. The riders will start in Santa Fe on September 3 and will overnight in Las Vegas, NM, on September 3, Springer, NM, on September 4, and Clayton, NM, on September 5 before heading out of state for an additional ten days of riding. I am not sure how the communications plan will take shape for this event. Individual volunteers as well as people willing to coordinate the operation in various locations are sought. If interested, let me know and I will put you in touch with the event organizers.

New Mexico Marathon – September 2

We have been asked to assist with this event for the first time this year. This is a one-way, 26-mile run from approximately Tramway and I-40 along Tramway west and south and eventually winding its way to Tiguex Park near Old Town. There are half marathon and 5K runs associated with the race as well. See www.newmexicomarathon.org. We will need stations at mileposts along the route and probably shadowing some race officials. Other needs depend on the communications plan that is developed.
